In July 1969, while the Rolling Stones performed a concert in Hyde Park, Alan Johnson and his young family moved from West London to the Britwell Estate in Slough for a fresh start. Despite its reputation among the locals, the community welcomed them warmly, providing a much needed relief from the tensions of their previous home in Notting Hill. Alan, a postman, took on multiple shifts and long hours to support his family, but found satisfaction in small moments like a quick smoke break or a kind farmer's wife offering breakfast. In Please, Mister Postman, the reader is transported to 1970s England, a time of Watney's Red Barrel, smoking, and traditional Sunday celebrations.
