Description
This book tells the tale of the Highland Scots who journeyed to Pictou, Nova Scotia, in 1773 aboard the brig Hector. Driven by famine, population pressures, rising rents, legal troubles, and the desire for land ownership, these brave settlers faced a harsh voyage. Upon arrival, they discovered the promised farmland was actually untouched forest. Their survival depended on the generosity of the Mi’kmaq and early New England settlers, who helped them adapt by learning to clear the land and use the forest. Their success attracted many more clansmen, turning northeastern Nova Scotia into a true New Scotland.
